Shell est une jeune-femme de 17 ans qui vit et travaille dans une station-service isolée dans les Highlands écossaises. Excepté de rares clients de passage et quelques habitués qui viennent pour faire signe et rester en contact, son seul compagnon est son père Pete, un homme introverti auquel elle est dévouée. La mère de Shell les a quittés il y a des années, laissant Pete élever lui-même sa fille. L'affection de Shell pour son père et ce solitaire voisinage leur inspirent de confuses émotions qu'ils ont tous deux des difficultés à gérer.
