À Chicago, en 1913, à la mort de sa mère, le jeune Harry Bankston, 10 ans, retrouve son père, Tyrone, dont il n'avait aucune nouvelle depuis des mois. Pour se faire pardonner cette longue absence, Tyrone propose à son fils de l'emmener en expédition au Canada. Tyrone entend attraper un grizzly. Sans scrupule, le braconnier parvient à capturer deux oursons. Mais la mère, à la recherche de ses petits, enlève le jeune Harry.
