Georges Faure, Français, travaille dans un bistrot new-yorkais. En situation illégale, il désire obtenir un permis de travail. Brontë Mitchell, une Américaine, horticultrice et de botanique, est employée comme paysagiste dans les quartiers pauvres de la ville. Son projet : un appartement avec jardin. Un ami commun, Anton, les convainc tous deux de contracter un mariage blanc : Georges obtiendrait ainsi la fameuse « carte verte » et Brontë, l'appartement qu'elle convoite et que seul un couple marié peut louer.
